A good leader has to have a purpose that is larger than he/she is and the balanced personality and skills to put that purpose into action.

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.”

Dionne Vernon | SHRM, PHR-CP, MBA

Dionne is a career strategist coach and leader of people, and she shares her perspective on effective leadership.

I think it is so important now, more than ever before, for all leaders of people to LEAD.

Lean in closer to employees; don’t lead from a distance!

Engage! Empathize!

Ask questions; don’t assume everything is okay.

Develop and empower your employees.

I hear so many stories about managers who lead from a distance and are disengaged from their teams. I am very sensitive to the indelible impact this can and has had on employees. The career trauma one experiences can be very crippling to one’s performance and ability to move forward. Never has there been a time where engaging with employees has been more important. The stakes are too high for employers and employees alike. Employees are humans! I would like to see us shift from using the term “employee engagement” to “human engagement.”

During the first year of the pandemic, I became very demotivated and could not understand why. Thanks to Adam Grant’s article on languishing, I was enlightened. I vulnerably and transparently shared how demotivated I felt with my team while in our virtual collaboration squares. I also shared how the article provided well-needed insight! Suddenly, the flood gate opened; my team immediately expressed that they felt the very same!

We engaged as humans, and my team thanked me profusely for being so open, as it made them realize they didn’t have to mask their emotions; they could speak freely. We now spend a vast majority of our team meetings engaging as humans; the work-related topics proceed that. While it’s important to have engagement strategies and programs, it’s more important that we LEAD and be kind, empathetic, and compassionate humans.

Dr. Mathew Christian | Autism Dad and Agent of Social Change

Dr. Christian commiserates on the similarities between leadership and parental responsibilities.

If leaders learn just one thing from The Great Resignation, it needs to be this: The leadership ability of middle management requires more attention and investment. If you’re not prepared to do what you’ve asked your team to do, you’re not leading.

Leadership is like parenting. You’re going to make tough, even unpopular, management decisions, experience the fullness of all your emotions, and probably make mistakes. But remember, at the end of the day, the reward is seeing your team manifest that emotional investment to live fulfilled lives and add value to the organization throughout its stages of growth. Leaders are not perfect, nor should that be an expectation.
